Asia Pacific People’s Power Convention Concludes in Kathmandu

The Asia Pacific People’s Power Convention recently concluded in Kathmandu, Nepal, after two days of discussions among social movement leaders and civil society organizations from the region. The convention, organized by ActionAid Nepal, Mellemfolkeligt Samvirke | ActionAid Denmark, and ActionAid Association (India), aimed to address social justice, achievements in combating discrimination, and the challenges posed by global climate change.

Activists from Nepal, India, Thailand, Myanmar, Philippines, Bangladesh, and Indonesia participated in the convention, sharing their experiences, challenges, and achievements in various areas. The inaugural ceremony featured Sujeeta Mathema, Executive Director for ActionAid Nepal, who emphasized the power of diversity and the role of social movements in driving positive change. Krishni Devi Tharu, former Deputy Mayor of Lumbini province, shared her experiences in the struggle against traditional bonded labor systems prevalent in the western Terai region of Nepal.

Dipali Sharma, Director Organizational Effectiveness and Programmes at ActionAid Association (India), stressed the need to address women’s subjugation, end patriarchy, and resolve crises in urban and rural areas through sustainable social movements. The convention featured sessions focusing on emerging challenges related to refugees and displacement across the Asia Pacific Region, the changing contours of the world of work, and the issue of land rights.

The convention concluded with a pledge from participants to continue discussions and work together to build popular movements in their respective countries. They also expressed a commitment to establish a hub for social movements across the Asia Pacific Region and to collaborate with oppressed communities worldwide to build sustainable futures based on the values of social and ecological justice.

Overall, the Asia Pacific People’s Power Convention provided a platform for meaningful dialogue, exchange of ideas, and a renewed commitment to driving positive change across the region and beyond.
