Google LLC, one of the world’s largest technology companies, has now been registered in Nepal’s tax system. As per the spokesperson of the Internal Revenue Department, Rajuprasad Pyakurel, Google has been registered with the Large Taxpayer Office to pay electronic service tax as per the government’s Financial Act of the current fiscal year 2079/80(BS). This move comes after the Nepalese government imposed an electronic service tax of two percent on non-residents providing electronic services to Nepalese consumers.
According to Pyakurel, Google’s various services and products offered in Nepal have been registered to pay the electronic service tax. Google is registered under the name of its regional office in Singapore, and the large taxpayer office in Harihar Bhavan, Lalitpur, has been assigned the responsibility of administering the electronic service tax.
While Google’s YouTube and Android operating system are popular in Nepal, the company also provides other services such as web browsing, cloud computing, Gmail, maps, and photos. However, the government does not have official data on Google’s annual income from Nepal. Going forward, Google will have to pay two percent of the total income earned from providing services to Nepalese consumers.
