ActionAid Nepal Unveils Climate Policy Landscape and Conducts 20th Social Audit

ActionAid International Nepal successfully conducted an event titled “Unveiling the Landscape of Nepal’s Climate Laws and Policies and the 20th National Social Audit” on June 5, 2024, at Hotel Himalaya in Kupondole.

On World Environment Day, discussions focused on Nepal’s climate change laws and impacts. Sujita Mathema, Executive Director of ActionAid Nepal, sought input on the adequacy of current climate laws and the need for separate legislation. Senior advocate Padam Bahadur Shrestha highlighted the lack of specific climate laws and the necessity to act under the Environmental Protection Act. He expressed regret over the government’s inaction on the Supreme Court’s order for specific climate laws.

ActionAid prioritizes climate justice, with participants emphasizing the need for action. MP Rama Kumari Paudel committed to raising climate issues in parliament and integrating fragmented laws. She criticized unchecked development practices and advocated for climate education in curricula.

Former National Planning Commission member Saloni Singh noted the implementation gap despite existing laws. Usha Jha pointed out public confusion due to multiple climate laws and stressed the need for comprehensive, understandable legislation. Mahesh Badal of ActionAid emphasized the lack of justice-focused laws.

The event aimed to make climate adaptation and mitigation strategies more inclusive. Nirmala KC, Senior Advisor at ActionAid, highlighted civil society’s role where government falls short.

The 20th National Social Audit included a review of ActionAid Nepal’s 2023 programs, reporting an income of NPR 400 million and expenses of NPR 369.6 million. The audit detailed program expenditures, fund enhancement, governance, and administration costs.
